Baptisms
We’re delighted that you are considering having your child baptized (sometimes referred to as ‘Christened’) or considering baptism for yourself. In the Church of England, being baptized means that candidates (or parents and godparents on behalf of those too young to decide for themselves) choose to respond to the loving call of God to live a life guided by and sustained by God. This involves entering into a relationship with God and God’s family, the church, and this choice is marked by a special ceremony that includes sprinkling water on the head of the candidate as a sign of God’s cleansing work in the candidate’s life.
Because choosing to follow God also involves choosing to become part of God’s family as we help each other to journey together, our normal policy is that those serious about making this commitment begin by coming along to some church services so that you can get to know us and we can get to know you. Once you’ve done this for a little while and feel settled, we will then explore in greater detail what baptism entails and, if you’re happy to proceed, set a date. Baptisms usually take place as part of the main service on the third Sunday of the month.
